QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John’s dance, cheer and band programs all participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event over the weekend by showing support and encouraging the walkers as they took part in the race.
The event is part of October's Breast Cancer Awareness month, serving as a way to bring together the community in honor of those who have survived or been diagnosed with cancer. It also helped to educate many young women on the importance of early detection and prevention.
“It's amazing to be part of this event every year,” St. John’s cheer coach Amanda Powers said. “It is hard to believe the thousands of people that this diseases effects in our own community. The walkers are survivors, patients, family members, friends, and strangers that all come together to raise awareness and money to find a cure. I love that we are able to bring some positive energy to the event by cheering on the walkers as they start the race.”
Many of the spirit team participants wore pink as a representation of their support for those faced with the battle of breast cancer. Pink ribbons were also placed around campus during the event to serve as a symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
October has been recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month since 1984. According to the American Cancer Society approximately 252,710 cases of breast cancer will diagnosed among women in the United States this year.
The money raised during the event will go towards lifesaving research and support programs to further the fight against this disease.
