QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team (11-3) came up with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Georgetown (8-4) at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. on Friday. The Red Storm reached the 11-win mark for the fifth consecutive dual-match season.
The game was the second half of a doubleheader at the NTC. The St. John's men's tennis team swept Georgetown, 4-0, in their meeting earlier Friday morning.
The Johnnies were strong in doubles play, taking all three matches to open up a 1-0 lead. Anna Morozova and Jessica Livianu opened up the afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Sophia Barnard and Victoire Saperstein in the top doubles spot. Olaya Inclan Solis and Zofia Stanisz followed with a scrappy 7-6(8) victory in the No. 3 pairing to capture the opening point.
Stephanie Elgegren and Jaide Collins also prevailed in doubles play, winning 7-5 over Margaret Psyhogeos and Sydney Goodson.
After Livianu, No. 67 in the Oracle/ITA women's singles rankings, gave the Johnnies a 2-0 lead with a win in the top singles slot, the Hoyas fought back with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 matchup.
Solis and Morozova came up clutch, though, finishing up consecutive victories to clinch the overall victory for St. John's. Solis, a sophomore, took down Goodson in the No. 5 spot while Morozova handled Risa Nakagawa, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 matchup.
Georgetown emerged victorious in the final two singles matches, but the win had already been secured.
The Hoyas fall to 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Johnnies improve to 4-0 in the conference thus far.
The Red Storm will host a home game with a bit of a twist on Sunday. Bryant University will make the trip down for a late afternoon tilt at Cunningham Park in Fresh Meadows, N.Y. Last year, the Red Storm beat Hartford 7-0 at the Cunningham facility.
