QUEENS, N.Y. - With the match tied at three and down one set to none in the final singles match of the day, Olaya Inclan Solis dug deep. She powered through a lengthy second set and came all the way back to topple Martina Bocchi at the No. 5 matchup and give the St. John's women's tennis team (13-3) a 4-3 victory over UMass (7-7) at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. on Friday.
With this thrilling victory, the Red Storm won its eighth-straight home match and posted its fourth win in the last five matches.
Inclan Solis' victory came at the end of a back and forth affair that started with tight doubles play. After Anna Morozova and Jessica Livianu opened things up with a 6-2 win at the top pairing, UMass responded with a 6-4 victory at No. 2, where Stephanie Elgegren and Jaide Collins could not overcome Ana Yrazusta and Janja Kovacevic.
Inclan Solis and Zofia Stanisz responded with a tough 7-5 victory in the No. 3 spot to open up a 1-0 advantage for the Red Storm heading into singles play.
The two sides traded singles victories until the very end. After UMass tied the contest at one, No. 67 Livianu took down Kovacevic 6-2, 6-2 in the top singles spot to put the Johnnies up 2-1. Soon after, Irina Preotescu put St. John's one point away from victory with a win at the No. 6 singles slot.
UMass took the next two singles matches to force a decisive final showdown. Morozova and Stanisz both battled hard in three-set losses to set up Inclan Solis' heroics.
Inclan Solis fell behind quickly after losing the first set 6-3. She recovered, narrowly scratching out a 7-6(4) victory to set up a decisive, winner-take-all third set against Bocchi, a freshman from Los Angeles. The sophomore from Spain handily won the final set, winning 6-1 to secure the come-from-behind victory in the final match of the day and gave her team the victory.
The Red Storm will get a week off after Friday's tough win, getting back on the courts on April 7 against Providence in Rhode Island.
