Box Score
The St. John's volleyball team defeated Georgetown on Saturday night in five sets at Carnesecca Arena.
With the win, the Red Storm has now played in 11 five-set matches in 2018 which breaks the record for most five-setters in a season, previously held by the 2004 team with 10. The Johnnies are now 7-4 in five-set matches this season.
Rachele Rastelli and Hanna Wagner each performed well on both sides of the ball. Rastelli recorded 12 kills and added five blocks, while Wagner put up 11 kills and six blocks.
"I'm so proud of our group tonight," Head Coach Joanne Persico said. "What a gutsy team effort. We had outstanding contributions from everyone. What an exciting fifth set and a great home weekend to go back-to-back with crucial BIG EAST wins."
The Red Storm began the evening with a 26-24 win in the first set. Kayley Wood recorded four kills in seven chances in the frame. The sophomore finished the match with eight.
The set would go back-and-forth before the Johnnies had a chance at 24-22 to take the frame. Two consecutive points by the Hoyas tied it at 24, but Wood put home two-straight kills of her own to give St. John's the 1-0 set advantage.
The Hoyas would bounce back and take the second set 25-22 despite four kills in the set from Efrosini Alexakou. St. John's kept it close the whole way, and was able to tie the set at 22-22 before Georgetown took the next three points to even the sets at 1-1.
Alexakou posted six kills, a service ace, and a block in a third set 25-18 win for the Red Storm, who hit .242 as a team in the frame.
The Johnnies had control of the third from the start and built up an early 8-2 lead. The closest the Hoyas would get would be at 17-13, but two-straight points from St. John's put the team up six and the Johnnies would keep control of the set the rest of the way.
Georgetown would then force a fifth set with a 25-23 win in set four. Rastelli had four kills and three blocks in the set, while Wagner hit .750 in set four. Again, the Red Storm had chances and would force a tie at 22-22 before the Hoyas took three of the next four points to set the five-set record for the Red Storm.
In that fifth set, the Red Storm never trailed and came out on top 15-12. Rastelli and Wagner each posted two kills, including the final two of the match for the Johnnies to improve their conference record to 7-4 and take sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST.
St. John's will hit the road next weekend to take on Butler and Xavier, with the first match against Butler coming at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.
