Red Storm keeper tallied 15 saves in two games last week
After coming up big for the Red Storm in a crucial stretch of BIG EAST play, Lenny Wilson has been named the Division I Men's National Player of the Week by United Soccer Coaches.
Â
A senior goalkeeper from Aberdeen, Scotland, Wilson allowed just one goal in 200 minutes of action last week, leading the Johnnies to a 1-0-1 record, four critical points in the BIG EAST standings and the team's second-straight BIG EAST Tournament berth.
Â
Wilson, a Hartwick transfer, began his week with a season-high eight saves in a 1-1 draw on the road at Villanova.Â
Â
Three days later in the nation's capital, Wilson stopped all seven shots on goal he faced, leading the Johnnies to a 1-0 victory over No. 24 Georgetown and notching his fourth shutout of the season in the process. With the win, St. John's has now taken down three ranked opponents in as many years, including two-straight regular season decisions against nationally ranked Georgetown squads.
Â
For his efforts, Wilson was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this month on Monday.
Â
Wilson is believed to be the first St. John's player to garner a national player of the week plaudit since Ryan Soroka was bestowed the honor by College Soccer News and Soccer America in November of 2006.
Â
Wilson and the Red Storm will close out the 2018 regular season on Wednesday evening at Belson Stadium, playing host to Providence to a 7 p.m. showdown. The contest will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Mike Watts on the call.
