QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2018) - Interim Head Softball Coach Bob Guerriero announced the signings of pitchers Mia Faieta and Erin Brown to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period Thursday.
Faieta joins St. John's from Cedar Grove High School in Cedar Grove, N.J. In the 2017 campaign, she made national headlines after completing a perfect game that included striking out all 21 batters she faced.
"[Faieta's 21-strikeout] game says it all," Guerriero said. "When the going gets tough, she takes care of it herself. She has the pitches to get it done and she is not intimidated by anyone. She is a fierce competitor, has a strong desire to win and finishes what she starts."
On top of her flawless perfect game a year prior, Faieta had an impressive 2017-18 season. She finished with a 17-5 record, 298 strikeouts and 0.69 ERA in 142.2 innings earning her the NJ.com Pitcher of the Year honors. In the 23 appearances of her junior campaign, Faieta struck out 10 or more batters in 18 games. The right-hander also pitched one of her seven no-hitters of the season in the Panthers win in the North Jersey Sectional Group I Final. In addition to her high school experience, the Cedar Grove native also shined for the New Jersey Fight based out of Fairfield, N.J.
Erin Brown comes to the East Coast after growing up in Thousand Oaks, Calif., where she has dominated the circle for La Reina High School. After a solid junior season, the Red Storm took notice of her improved play over the last two seasons. The right-hander posted a 16-3 record with a 0.62 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 20 appearances in the 2017-18 season.
"We have been scouting her for two years. She has been working hard to get better and we have seen that," Guerriero said. "She always wants the ball and is very involved in the game when she pitches."
Brown threw a perfect game and a no-hitter to go along with five shutouts in her 2018 season. She also stepped up to the plate with 21 hits, seven RBIs and 14 runs to her credit. Outside of her high school career, she played for the Cerritos, Calif., based Ohana Tigers 18U Gold Team as well.
"I look forward to both of them being great additions to the pitching staff," Guerriero said. "Both are excellent students and they fit perfectly into our team mindset of, 'we are here to win.'"
The Red Storm will begin the 2019 season in February. Stay tuned to RedStormSports.com for the entire 2019 schedule release in the coming weeks.
