Red Storm looking for its first early-season tournament title since 2010
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After taking down California in the opening game of the GotPrint.com Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper on Monday night at Barclays Center, the Red Storm will look to claim the tournament's title on Tuesday night against VCU.
Tip-off between the Red Storm and the Rams is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2 and 970 AM WNYM.
St. John's and VCU will meet in an early season tournament for the second time in the span of just three seasons. In 2016, the Red Storm and Rams met on the second day of the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Fresh off a close loss to No. 24 Michigan State the previous day, the Johnnies erased an 11-point second-half deficit to tie the contest three times down the stretch, but were ultimately unable to close the gap for good. That 75-69 win for VCU is the only meeting in the history of the two programs.
Shamorie Ponds scored a team-high 18 points in the Red Storm's last meeting with VCU. Ponds is the only player on the current St. John's roster to have played in that game.
A win on Tuesday would give St. John's its first championship in an early-season tournament since 2010-11, when the Johnnies took home the hardware at The Great Alaska Shootout. That year, the Red Storm would go on to win 21 games, including six victories over top-15 opponents, and make the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade.
