St. John's University held its dedication ceremony for the John "Doc" Gimmler Indoor Practice Facility on Sunday afternoon.
Surrounded by friends, family, and a multitude of supporters, the dedication ceremony for the late Doc Gimmler was held inside the golf room on the lower level of Carnesecca Arena. The event included remarks from director of athletics Mike Cragg, men's and women's golf head coaches Mal Galletta and Ambry Bishop, Doc Gimmler's son John Gimmler and St. John's legend Mr. Jack Kaiser.
"Family is one of our core values at St. John's University and Doc Gimmler played an enormous role in our family over the better part of more than four decades," said Cragg. "It is an honor to welcome back his distinguished family as we further immortalize Doc Gimmler here at St. John's."
Following the speeches, an on-court dedication took place during the men's basketball game against Wagner. The Gimmler family was accompanied on the floor by Cragg, Kaiser, St. John's great Lou Carnesecca, and other university administrators.
"I was very fortunate to be a close friend of John "Doc" Gimmler because of the quality of a man he was," said Mr. Kaiser. "He had a great sense of humor and he took plenty of time to help the student-athletes and mentor them. He was a great friend, colleague, coach, husband, father, and son. I can't come up with all the adjectives to tell you how Jack Gimmler affected me and all the people around him."
Gimmler passed away in 1996, but will forever be remembered for his impact on collegiate golf, collegiate athletics, and St. John's over his more than four decades of service.
Gimmler joined the Red Storm family in 1950. Following graduation, Gimmler went on to become the head athletic trainer for St. John's before taking over as the head coach of the men's golf team and Associate Director of Athletics.
Gimmler guided his team to the inaugural BIG EAST league title in 1979 and led the Johnnies to nine conference championships in the first 11 years of the league's existence. Under Gimmler's direction, St. John's finished either first or second in the BIG EAST in all but one season between 1979 and 1990. The long-time coach also led St. John's to 10 Metropolitan championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.
"St. John's was his heart and home," said John Gimmler. "He loved St. John's and he loved all of the people he came to meet, whether it be students or colleagues like Jack Kaiser and Lou Carnesecca."
The John "Doc" Gimmler Practice Facility features a custom putting and chipping green, as well as hitting bays. In addition, the room consists of a swing video analysis center powered by ForeSight Sports, which measures all club and ball data. It also includes a V1 Video Swing Analysis and SAM PuttLab technology.
