The St. John's women's soccer team's senior defender Mecara Bruce has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Women's Soccer Second Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday afternoon.
Â
Bruce becomes the first St. John's women's soccer player to garner the accolade since Rachel Daly, who received the distinction from CoSIDA following the 2015 season.
Â
Bruce, a finance major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, was an integral part of the Red Storm's back line that recorded four shutouts this season. The Bordentown, N.J., native registered her first career point this year with an assist against Villanova. Starting in all 19 games this season, the redshirt senior played a total 1,657 minutes, the most on the squad.
Â
With the accolade, Bruce becomes just the fifth player in program history to earn a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Team. The 5-foot-5 defender joins Amanda Pasciolla who found a second team spot in 2009, while Kelly McConnell and Nicole Pasciolla received third team bids in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Most recently Daly earned a spot on the second team in 2015.
