QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team dropped a tough, nonconference battle to Penn, falling 4-3 on Saturday evening from the Hect Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (10-4) had its four-match win streak snapped with the loss, and fall to 2-4 away from the National Tennis Center this season.
Penn opened up doubles play with a victory from the top court, but St. John's responded with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 position from Olaya Inclan Solis and Irina Preotescu to send all eyes to the No. 3 spot for the doubles point.
There, the Quakers escaped with a 6-3 victory to clinch the doubles point and grabbed an early 1-0 lead.
Penn carried the momentum into singles play, building a 2-0 lead after a win from the No. 3 court, but St. John's responded again when Preotescu captured a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position to get the Johnnies on the board.
The Quakers rallied off back-to-back victories to clinch the dual-match win, but the Red Storm did not give up the fight.
Solis picked up a 7-6, 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court, including a great rally in the opening set, and Jessica Livianu ended the match with a thrilling, three-set victory. The sophomore claimed the opening set, 7-6, but fell, 6-4, in the second to set up a tiebreaker. There, Livianu rolled to a 10-5 win to end the match on a positive note for the Johnnies.
St. John's returns to action on Mar. 30 at noon when the Johnnies battle DePaul in the National Tennis Center.
