QUEENS, N.Y. - BIG EAST play continues this weekend for the St. John's softball team as the Johnnies host Seton Hall in a three-game set. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and then the squad will close out play on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one is slated for noon with both matchups available on ESPN3.
The Red Storm has been stellar at the plate as of late, winning five of its last eight contests including series victories over BIG EAST foes Georgetown and Villanova, placing the Johnnies third in the conference standings behind DePaul and Creighton.
Over the squad's last eight games, the Red Storm has outscored opponents 62 to 50, while boasting a .320 batting average to maintain their spot as the third best in the BIG EAST. The Johnnies have belted 12 home runs over the last eight games, including three grand slams off the bats of Jessi Bryant, Laura Delgado and Gretchen Bowie. Overall, the Red Storm tops the conference with 36 dingers.
Bowie shined at the dish in the team's most recent outing on Thursday against LIU Brooklyn. The sophomore registered a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate, driving in five RBIs, while scoring two runs. The Sparta, N.J., native smashed two home runs in the contest, including a bottom of the sixth grand slam for the second time in her career as a Johnnie.
The two programs enter their 81st all-time contest on Friday with the Red Storm holding a 55-25 advantage, winning 11-straight against the Pirates. Most recently, the Johnnies swept Seton Hall in a three-game set to close out the 2017 regular season. As a result, St. John's matched the program record for regular-season wins with 31.
The Pirates enter play after losing to Hofstra on Tuesday, 10-2. Despite the setback, Janae Barracato continued to pace the team, recording a home run in Tuesday's contest. The rookie currently leads Seton Hall with a .328 batting average along with five home runs, eight doubles, 16 RBIs and 19 runs scored. Leading the Pirates in the circle is Reganne Camp, who has hurled 103.1 innings and owns a 2.98 ERA with 79 strikeouts.
Following the weekend series, the Johnnies will prepare for a five-game stretch that includes two midweek matchups with local foes Stony Brook and Wagner.
