Red Storm drops season opener in Southern California
The St. John's men's soccer team dropped its season opener on Friday, falling to UC Santa Barbara by a score of 2-0.
St. John's played even with the Gauchos for most of the first half before Carter Clemmensen broke a scoreless deadlock in the 41st minute. Thirty minutes later, UCSB added another tally off the foot of Michael Rodney to put the game out of reach.
Nine members of the Red Storm's starting XI made their St. John's debut on Friday, including seven players who registered their first appearance in a Division I game. Overall, eight freshmen took to the pitch for the Johnnies.
UCSB outshot the Red Storm, 12-5, on the evening. Skage Simonsen registered three of the team's five attempts, one of which was on goal.
Lenny Wilson played the full 90 minutes in goal for St. John's, making two saves in the process.
St. John's will return to action on Sunday, facing off against Loyola Marymount. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
