St. John’s Wins Third-Straight Jack Kaiser Classic

The Red Storm goes 2-0 on day two to record a perfect 4-0 for the tournament.
The Red Storm won the Jack Kaiser Classic for the third-consecutive season on Saturday as they defeated Fordham in four sets and Eastern Michigan in five to finish the tournament with a 4-0 record.
St. John's began the second day of the event with a win over Fordham using 13 kills from Lexie Lobdell. The senior set her career-high in the category while helping to pace the Johnnies on the offensive attack. The Aurora, Ill., native was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Rachele Rastelli and the Tournament's Most Valuable Player Erica Di Maulo. The Milan, Italy, native has been named the MVP of the Jack Kaiser Classic each of the past three seasons.
The Johnnies used a late 5-0 run thanks to two-straight errors from Fordham to force a timeout. The 16-8 Red Storm lead was one the Red Storm would keep to take the set.
St. John's was unable to carry the momentum into the second set as the Rams hit a clip of .300 and held the Johnnies to a .000 hitting percentage to even the match at one set apiece.
The Red Storm came back to take set three despite dropping the first four points in the frame. Rastelli posted five kills in the third set alone and finished with 12 kills in her third collegiate match.
The set was knotted at 17-17 before the Rams went on a 4-1 run to take a 21-18 advantage. St. John's went on to take seven of the next eight points using three Fordham errors to win the third set.
The Johnnies took the match in the fourth set taking the lead for good after breaking a 7-7 tie with a 2-0 run capped off with an ace by Erica Di Maulo. St. John's led by as many as nine in the final before a late Fordham rally was ended with a serve in the net, giving the Red Storm the victory.
The second match against Eastern Michigan became a de facto championship match as both teams entered the contest with a 3-0 record.
The Johnnies dropped the first set that went back and forth for a majority of the frame. The score was knotted in a tie on 11 different occasions during the opening set as both teams traded leads. Di Maulo delivered 11 assists during the match opener and led St. John's with 51 in the match.
St. John's came back in the second set using five kills from Lobdell, who recorded her first career double-double in the match with 13 kills and 13 digs. Amanda Sanabia also recorded 10 digs for St. John's. The Red Storm hit .208 in the second frame with only two errors and never trailed after leading 8-7 with an ace from Rastelli. The Parma, Italy, native finished the match with her second double-double in four matches recording 17 kills and 11 digs.

Wagner and Lobdell recorded back-to-back blocks before Wagner and Di Maulo put the Johnnies up 5-1 early in the final set defined by runs.
Eastern Michigan responded with a 3-0 run of to cut the lead to one followed by a 5-1 run for St. John's to put the Johnnies up 10-5. The Eagles would not go quietly as they answered with a 5-0 run of their own to tie it at 10 forcing the Red Storm to call a timeout.
