Former St. John’s standout wins first PGA Tour tournament in six years
Former St. John's standout Keegan Bradley claimed his first PGA Tour tournament title in six years on Monday afternoon, outlasting world no. 1 Justin Rose is a sudden-death playoff at the BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club.
By virtue of his victory, Bradley, 32, moved from 52nd to sixth in the FedEx Cup standings, securing a spot in The Tour Championship for the first time since 2014.
Tied with Rose at 20 under following 72 holes of play, Bradley fired off a final-round 64 before coming up clutch in a one-hole playoff to claim his first title since the 2012 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
The Woodstock, Vt., native entered the day three shots off the pace of Rose before opening up the final round with a birdie on the par-4 first. After bogeying the par-4 fourth, Bradley poured in four birdies over his next five holes to make the turn in 31.
Following four-straight pars to start his inward nine, Bradley birdied the 14th to grab a share of the lead with Rose and Billy Horschel. He took sole possession of first place following back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17, perfectly lagging a long eagle putt on the final par 5 before sticking his tee shot to 10 feet and promptly sinking the ensuing putt on the par-3 17th.
Bradley briefly fell out of the lead after bogeying the last, but Rose shared a similar fate on the long par-4 18th, setting up the sudden-death playoff with the 2008 St. John's graduate.
With both players off the back of the green in two, Bradley stepped over his ball first and left his birdie try just a foot away from the hole, setting up an easy tap-in par. Rose left his birdie chance five feet below the hole before powering his par putt past the cup, effectively sealing the victory for Bradley.
Bradley, the winner of the 2011 PGA Championship and the 2011 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, has now won four times on tour.
