Red Storm to welcome the preseason Patriot League favorites to Belson Stadium
Following the squad's second overtime win of the season on Saturday night, the St. John's men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, playing host to the Greyhounds of Loyola Maryland at Belson Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3 with Jonathan Yardley and Glenn Crooks on the call.
The Johnnies enter their third home contest of the season on the heels of some more extra-time heroics from their highly touted freshman class, as Skage Simosen delivered the game winner in the 100th minute to lift the Red Storm past Temple, 1-0, on Saturday in Philadelphia. Simonsen became the second Red Storm rookie in the span of just eight days to lead the team to victory in overtime, as Tani Oluwaseyi netted the golden goal in the Johnnies' win over Fairfield on Aug. 31. Simonsen and Oluwaseyi are currently tied for second on the squad with six points apiece, having each recorded two goals and two assists on the young campaign. The rookie pairing is currently part of a three-way tie with Marquette's Luka Sunesson for the conference lead in points among freshmen.
Matt Forster, who assisted on Simonsen's game winner against the Owls, currently ranks fifth in the BIG EAST with seven points (3 G, 1A). The junior midfielder from Bedford, England, is currently just one point shy of tying his total from all of last season, a campaign in which he started all 19 of the Red Storm's contests.
The victory over Temple also marked the first of the year for St. John's by way of shutout, as Lenny Wilson stopped all three shots on goal he faced to record his 17th career clean and his first as a member of the Red Storm. The Hartwick transfer is now 2-1-0 on the season with a 0.96 goals against average.
St. John's has recorded two overtime victories in its opening five games for the first time in nearly two decades. The last time the Red Storm enjoyed such prolific extra-time success so early in a campaign came all the way back in 2000, when Shalrie Joseph scored a pair of overtime game winners against Wake Forest and Seton Hall in the second and third contests of the year, respectively.
Luke Hansen made his St. John's debut against the Owls, becoming the 14th first-year player and the eighth freshmen to take the pitch this season for the Red Storm. St. John's features five student-athletes in their first year of collegiate soccer that have started each of the team's first five games: Simonsen, Johan Aquilon, Athit Berg, Brandon Knapp and Tiago Teixeira.
Loyola Maryland, the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League, enters Tuesday's contest with a record of 2-1 after having its most recent match against William & Mary canceled due to inclement weather. The Greyhounds opened the season with a pair of convincing wins over Mount St. Mary's and Rutgers, topping those two opponents by a combined score of 6-1. In their most recent contest on Aug. 31, Loyola fell victim to nationally ranked Villanova, 1-0, on the road in overtime.
Tuesday will mark the second time in as many weeks that the Johnnies have welcomed a MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List selection to Belson Stadium, as junior forward Brian Saramango was one of 32 Division I men's soccer players to garner the accolade. A two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection, Saramango scored eight goals, all of which came in conference play, during an injury-shortened campaign last year. This year, the New Hyde Park native has three goals in as many games for the Greyhounds to go along with a pair of assists.
St. John's and Loyola Maryland will meet for the fifth time in the history of the two programs on Tuesday with the Red Storm still looking for its first win in the series (0-2-2). The two teams have faced off in each of the past two seasons, as the Johnnies and Greyhounds drew, 1-1, at Belson Stadium in 2016 before Loyola topped the Red Storm, 1-0, in Baltimore last year.
