Red Storm Falls to Hofstra in Straight Sets

St. John’s falls to 8-4 on the season despite double double from Di Maulo

The St. John's volleyball team fell to Hofstra on Tuesday at Carnesecca Arena 3-0. This marks the first time this season the Red Storm has lost at home, where the team is now 4-1.
The Johnnies (8-4) tallied 13 kills in the first set, nine of which came from freshmen Efrosini Alexakou (5) and Rachele Rastelli (4). The two newcomers tied for the team lead in the match with 11 kills each. With St. John's leading 10-9, the Red Storm went on a 5-1 run to jump out to a 15-10 lead midway through the frame.
Hofstra (8-3) called a timeout and proceeded to go on a 10-3 run of its own to regain the lead at 21-18. St. John's would pull to within one before the Pride would take the set 25-22.
The second set went back and forth as well with 11 ties and nine lead changes throughout the set. The Red Storm came up with four blocks in the frame two with Erica Di Maulo and Nia Diaz each with three in the set.
Di Maulo would go on to tie her career high with five in the contest. The junior setter also led the team with 31 assists. She added 12 digs for her fifth double double of the season. St. John's was tied as late as 20-20 before Hofstra pulled ahead and took a 25-23 set win to put them up 2-0 in the match.
Despite posting their best hitting percentage in a set of the evening (.167), St. John's came up short in the third set 25-19 giving Hofstra the match. The Red Storm was down 20-19 before the Pride took the next five points.
St. John's will travel to Connecticut this weekend to participate in the Dog Pound Challenge at UConn. The Johnnies will begin the event against Rutgers on Friday at 10 a.m. before finishing in the evening against Holy Cross at 7 p.m. The Red Storm will come back on Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on host-school UConn to finish the event.
