St. John’s to Travel to UConn for Dog Pound Challenge

The Red Storm volleyball team will compete in its final nonconference tournament of the 2018 season when it travels to Storrs, Conn. for the 2018 Dog Pound Challenge at UConn this weekend.
The Johnnies will begin the event at 10 a.m. on Friday when they take on Rutgers followed by a match against Holy Cross at 4 p.m. St. John's will end the event facing host-school UConn on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for each match on uconnhuskies.com.
St. John's will hope to bounce back from a loss on Tuesday night to Hofstra. The Johnnies fell at home for the first time this season against the Pride despite Erica Di Maulo's fifth double double of the year.
The junior posted 31 assists and 12 digs in the match, putting her at 2,867 digs for her career. The setter is now only 133 away from becoming the fifth member of the Red Storm in program history to reach 3,000 for her career.
Amanda Sanabia is also closing in on a milestone. The current BIG EAST leader in digs is only 83 digs away from 1,000 in her career. The junior is coming off a week that placed her on the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
The Scarlet Knights come into the tournament with a 5-5 record after finishing second in their home event, the Rutgers Invitational. The Scarlet Knights went 2-1 in the event defeating Howard before falling to Tulane on Friday and beating Navy on Saturday. Jasmine Stackhouse made the All-Tournament Team and leads the team on the season with a .417 hitting percentage. The junior currently ranks sixth in the Big Ten in the category. After finishing 5-27 in 2017 and 0-20 in league play, Rutgers was picked to finish 14th in the conference. CJ Werneke is in his 11th season leading the Scarlet Knights. Since his first season in 2008, Rutgers has finished with a record above .500 just once, going 18-12 in 2012.
Holy Cross finished 5-24 last season with a 2-14 conference record and were picked to finish eighth in the nine-team Patriot League. Melissa Batie-Smoose is tenth head coach in program history and in her fourth season at the helm of Holy Cross. In 2016, she led the program to its highest win total since 2011 with 10. The Crusaders have taken advantage during serves, currently lead the Patriot League in service aces per set with 1.51. The Crusaders also boast the individual leader in the category in Regan Wright (0.82). The freshman also ranks ninth in the conference in digs per set (3.39) and trails only teammate Sophie VanSeveren who is second in the Patriot League with 4.75. The Red Storm currently owns a 5-0 record against Holy Cross after defeating the Crusaders to open the 2017 season.
UConn enters the weekend 6-4 on the season after finishing 1-2 at the DePaul Invitational. The Huskies finished Friday with a 1-1 record after falling to Florida Atlantic before defeating fellow BIG EAST member DePaul. The team finished the tournament Saturday with a loss against Purdue Fort Wayne. Kris Grunwald was named the head coach of UConn in 2014. The Huskies have posted two winning seasons in his first four years at the helm of the team. The former BIG EAST member was picked to finish 11th in the American Athletic Conference in 2018. Senior Emma Turner leads the American in assists per set at 9.70 and ranks fifth in program history in career assists with 2,724. The Huskies lead the all-time matchup against St. John's owning a 13-9 record against the Johnnies with the most recent match coming at the 2017 Jack Kaiser Classic with UConn winning in three sets.
