Season-opening Columbia Invite Begins September 14th
On Thursday, St. John's Women's Tennis Head Coach Lauren Leo unveiled her team's 2018 fall schedule. The team's slate features five tournaments to be played over the next three months, highlighted by junior Jessica Livianu's participation in the Oracle/ITA Masters Tournament.
In 2017-18, the Red Storm turned in one of the most successful seasons in program history, capturing its first-ever BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship and earned an automatic berth in the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament after defeating DePaul, 4-2, in the conference title match last May. Leo's squad ended the 2017-18 campaign with a 17-6 overall record, including a 4-1 in BIG EAST play, marking the program's fourth-straight season with at least 14 wins.
St. John's will open up the fall tournament season close to home with the Columbia Invitational from Sept. 14-16. This will be the team's third-straight appearance at this invitational, held at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center in New York, N.Y. Last season, Livianu won the Brooklyn Singles Tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. The Red Storm also saw two other finals appearances from its roster, as Delia Arranz reached the Manhattan Singles Tournament finals and the duo of Jaide Collins and Zofia Stanisz reached the finals of the Doubles 2 Tournament.
On September 20-23, Livianu, a 2017 All-American, will head to Malibu, Calif., to compete in her second-consecutive Oracle/ITA Masters Tournament. Last year, the two-time BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Year became the first player from the conference to reach the quarterfinals of this tournament. This national collegiate championship event will be held at Pepperdine University and the Malibu Racquet Club and will feature the returning player of the year from each Division I conference with one additional wild card spot.
St. John's will play at the West Point Invitational from Sept. 28-30, at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center and Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.
The Red Storm will then compete for the ITA Regional Championships at Yale University, on Oct. 11-15.
The Johnnies will close its fall season for the second- straight season with a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. for the UB Indoor Invite on Oct. 26-28 at the Miller Tennis Center.
