Third-Seeded St. John’s Falls Short in BIG EAST Semifinals to Second-Seeded DePaul

CAYCE, S.C. – The third-seeded St. John's women's tennis team fell to the second-seeded DePaul, 4-3, in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm secured the doubles point before the Blue Demons rallied with four singles victories to claim the match.
In doubles action, DePaul opened with a win on the No. 1 court, but Charlotta Buss and Giulia Bizzari responded with a 6-1 victory to even the score. Noemi Babikova and Victoria Papadopoulou then delivered a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
Holding a 1-0 advantage, St. John's extended its lead in singles play. Buss earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Clara Nilsson on the No. 5 court, and Babikova followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Hannah Smith at No. 2 to give the Red Storm a 3-0 edge.
DePaul answered by winning the next three singles matches to even the score and force a deciding match on the No. 6 court. In a three-set battle, Bizzari took the opening set, 7-5, before Helin Alvarez responded with 6-3 and 6-2 wins in the final two sets to secure the 4-3 victory for the Blue Demons.
St. John's concludes its season at 16-6 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST play, marking its 11th consecutive appearance in the conference semifinals.
