Third-Seeded St. John’s Takes Down Sixth-Seeded Villanova, 4-1

The Red Storm are set to face second-seeded DePaul on Friday at 1 p.m.
CAYCE, S.C. – The third-seededSt. John's women's tennis team defeated sixth-seeded Villanova, 4-1, on Friday afternoon in Cayce, S.C., to advance to the BIG EAST semifinals.
The Red Storm swept doubles play to secure the opening point before claiming three singles victories to clinch the match.
Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman set the tone with a dominant 6-0 win over Emily Callahan and Maggie Gehrig on the No. 1 court. Noemi Babikova and Victoria Papadopoulou followed with a 6-4 victory over Lauren Monti and Jenna Stevens at No. 2 doubles to secure the point.
In singles action, Charlotta Buss extended the lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alina Kornyeva on the No. 5 court. After Villanova picked up a point at No. 3 singles, Babikova responded with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Gehrig to give St. John's a 3-1 advantage.
Redman clinched the match on the No. 1 court, battling to a 7(8)-6(6), 6-3 win to secure the 4-1 result.
St. John's will face second-seeded DePaul in Saturday's semifinal. The Blue Demons hold a 3-1 edge in postseason meetings between the two programs and earned a 5-2 victory over the Red Storm earlier this season in Chicago.
First serve from the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
