The Red Storm beats Crusaders in three sets to end Day One in Connecticut
The St. John's volleyball team took down Holy Cross in three sets to improve to 10-4 on the season and 2-0 at the Dog Pound Challenge.
"The team did a terrific job of keeping their focus, mental toughness, and consistency through two matches today," Head Coach Joanne Persico said.
Sheena Yoshioka started the match with a service ace and it sparked a 5-0 run to start the match for St. John's. The freshman finished with two in the match. The Red Storm was able to spread the ball around in the opening frame with six different Johnnies posting a kill. The team hit .316 as a unit and .388 in the entire match.
The second set started much like the first with St. John's jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Crusaders then went on an 8-4 run to tie the set at 8, but the Crusaders failed to take the lead. With the score tied at 10, St. John's proceeded to score eight in a row and 15 of the next 19 points to take the set 25-14. Efrosini Alexakou had five kills in the set and led the team with 13 in the match. Rachele Rastelli and Nia Diaz also posted high percentages in the second with four and three kills respectively.
Set three finished the match as the Red Storm won 25-14 and never trailed in the match. Kayley Wood posted five kills in the third frame and finished with nine in the game. Ariadni Kathariou recorded a career-high five kills in the match and Yanjiao Zhao delivered five assists to close out the match. Erica Di Maulo led the team in the category with 31 assists in the match while Amanda Sanabia had 13 digs to pace the Johnnies.
The Red Storm will return to finish the Dog Pound Challenge tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they take on UConn, who hosted the event.
