BIG EAST Release
The St. John's women's basketball team finalized its schedule for 2018-19 season on Monday with the BIG EAST's public release of the conference lineup.
The upcoming season will feature nine home games, including a showdown with reigning BIG EAST Champion DePaul on Feb. 17 at "The World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden. The team's other eight contests will be held at Carnesecca Arena, the home of the St. John's Women's Basketball team.
All 10 BIG EAST teams will appear at least twice on national television during regular-season play across the FOX Sports family of networks, while an additional two games will be featured on CBS Sports Network (CBSSN). For the fourth-straight year, the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) will air all women's basketball games during conference play that are not scheduled for a television broadcast, a total of 74 tilts.
For the sixth-consecutive year, FS1 and FS2 will provide coverage of the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament, to be held for the second-straight year at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. FS2 will air the quarterfinal round on March 10 before FS1 picks up the remainder of the tournament with the semifinals on March 11 and the championship game on March 12. The BIG EAST Digital Network will stream both first round games on live March 9.
After the Red Storm's 11-game non-conference slate, the Johnnies will kickoff BIG EAST play with a three-game road stretch. The team will begin league action in South Orange, N.J. on Sunday, Dec. 30, taking on local foe Seton Hall in a 1 p.m. matchup.
Following that Sunday showdown with the Pirates, the Red Storm will play its first game of 2019 in Cincinnati when the team takes on Xavier on Friday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. The Red Storm swept the Musketeers during the 2017-18 campaign and has not lost a game at Cintas Center since 2015.
After taking on Xavier, the Johnnies will wrap up their three-game road swing at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Sunday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m. The contest will be televised nationally on FS2. The Johnnies enjoyed success against the Bulldogs last season, winning both of their meetings by at least 15 points. Junior Alisha Kebbe put forth a stellar performance at Hinkle Fieldhouse last season, tallying her first career double-double with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Red Storm will play its first contest of the conference slate at home when St. John's welcomes Providence for an 11 a.m. game on Friday, Jan. 11. The game will also serve as the program's annual field trip day, as the Johnnies will welcome thousands of local school children to Carnesecca Arena. Providence took both regular season meetings between the two teams last year including a heart breaking 70-68 loss at Alumni Hall. Despite outscoring Providence, 20-3, down the stretch, the Red Storm ultimately fell just short of completing the comeback.
Before hitting the road for the second time, the Johnnies will welcome Creighton to Carnesecca Arena on Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. Last season the Red Storm split the two programs' regular season contests, including an overtime victory in Queens on Jan. 5. The win was highlighted by Tiana England's first career double-double with 17 points and 10 assists. The Red Storm then fell to Creighton in the team's next two meetings, including during the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
After taking on the Bluejays, the Red Storm will hit the road for a pair of challenging contests against the two participants in last year's conference championship game, DePaul and Marquette. On Friday, Jan. 18, St. John's will look to claim its first victory over the Blue Demons since the 2015-16 campaign, when the Red Storm upset top-seeded DePaul on its home floor to reach the finals of the conference tournament before eventually winning the BIG EAST Championship for the first time in 28 years.
Following its contest with the Blue Demons, the Red Storm will look to defeat Marquette after falling in both regular season contests to the Golden Eagles during the 2017-18 slate.
The Red Storm will then return to Queens for four-straight home contests at Carnesecca Arena, welcoming Georgetown on Friday, Jan. 25, followed by Villanova on Sunday, Jan. 27. The Johnnies will close out the four-game home stretch with showdowns against Butler on Friday, Feb. 1, and Xavier on Sunday, Feb. 3.
After playing four games on their home court, the Johnnies will hit the road for their second contests of the 2018-19 slate with Creighton and Providence on Friday, Feb. 8, and Sunday, Feb. 10.
Just a month shy of the team's first meeting with Marquette, the Johnnies will welcome the Golden Eagles to Carnesecca Arena on Friday, Feb. 15, for a 7 p.m. showdown. Following the Red Storm's second matchup of the season with Marquette, the Johnnies will then host DePaul at "The Mecca," Madison Square Garden. This will mark the Red Storm's first time playing inside "The World's Most Famous Arena" since the 2016-17 season, when the Johnnies topped Xavier, 64-55. That contest will be part of a single admission doubleheader with the men's basketball team, who will be taking on defending national champion Villanova at 5 p.m. that evening.
Next up for the Johnnies will be a contest with Villanova at the newly renovated Finneran Pavilion. Last season the Red Storm split its series with the Wildcats, including a 70-64 victory at home for St. John's. The win marked the Johnnies fifth-straight BIG EAST victory of the 2017-18 season and capped the first five-game winning streak in conference play for the Red Storm since the 2013-14 campaign.
The Johnnies will close out their regular season with a road swing beginning on Sunday, Feb. 24, at Georgetown. The 2 p.m. contest will be televised nationally on FS2.
Following a week off, the Red Storm will return home to play its final game of the season on Sunday, Mar. 3, in a 2 p.m. contest with Seton Hall at Carnesecca Arena.
