Red Storm Headed to Georgetown to Open BIG EAST Slate

St. John’s swept the Hoyas in two matches last season

The Red Storm volleyball team will travel to the nation's capital to take on Georgetown on Wednesday at 5 p.m. to open the conference season.

The Johnnies are coming off a 3-0 weekend in Connecticut at the Dog Pound Challenge that gave them their third regular season tournament title of 2018. Efrosini Alexakou was named Tournament MVP while Amanda Sanabia and Rachele Rastelli joined her on the All-Tournament Team.

St. John's opened the event on Friday with a four-set win over Rutgers and a sweep of Holy Cross in the nightcap. The Red Storm finished on Saturday with a three-set victory over host-school UConn to claim the title. The Johnnies also claimed victories at the Jack Kaiser Classic and the Cornell Invitational.

The Red Storm finished the nonconference slate 11-4, which is its best start through the team's first 15 matches since 2014. That team started 11-4 before finishing 19-14 with an 8-10 conference record.

Erica Di Maulo enters the match 31 assists shy of 3,000 for her career. The junior setter ranks fifth in program history in the category. The Milan, Italy, native notched career assist 2,000 against the Hoyas last season and could achieve another milestone against Georgetown. Di Maulo has reached 31 assists in 12 of the Red Storm's 15 matches this season.

Georgetown comes into the match with a 7-5 record after sweeping the Dig the District Invitational in the team's home arena. The Hoyas dropped one set in three matches sweeping Morgan State on Friday before coming back and defeating Alabama A&M in four sets and Loyola Maryland in three.

 Symone Speech, Iva Vujosevic, and Brennan Wilhite represented Georgetown on the All-Tournament Team. Speech currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.354) trailing only the Red Storm's Nia Diaz (.376). The senior from Oak Park, Ill. was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team unanimously for the 2018 season and has posted 1,182 career kills and 303 career blocks.

Toby Rens is in his first season as the head coach of Georgetown and enters with 378 career wins prior to the 2018 season after coaching at Northern Michigan, Maryland Eastern Shore, LIU Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, and Chicago State.

The Hoyas finished 8-22 last season to go along with a 2-16 conference record. St. John's downed the Hoyas in straight sets in both meetings last season. The Red Storm owns the series lead between the two schools 20-9 and have won eight in a row against Georgetown. St. John's has not lost to the Hoyas since 2013.
