Coming off the squad's second-straight positive result to open BIG EAST play, the St. John's men's soccer team will return to non-league action on Tuesday night, welcoming Mount St. Mary's to Belson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm enters Tuesday's contest on the heels of a 1-1 draw with Xavier, taking a point from a Musketeers team that has yet to lose a decision in 2018. With two conference games under the belt of each BIG EAST team, St. John's is currently tied for second in the standings behind league-leading Creighton.
The Johnnies have now gone unbeaten in each of their first two BIG EAST games in four-straight seasons dating back to 2015.
Skage Simonsen and Matt Forster provided the offense once again for St. John's against Xavier, as the pair connected for an 11th minute tally to put St. John's on the board. The goal marked Simonsen's third of year, which is tied for the league lead among freshmen in that category. Forster's assist bumped his team-high point total to 10, which also ranks third in the conference.
Xavier knotted the contest at one later in the half, scoring on a rebound off a saved penalty kick in the 44th minute. Lenny Wilson made his second-straight start between the pipes, becoming the first Red Storm keeper to start two-consecutive games this season. The senior from Aberdeen, Scotland, maintained his sub-one goals against average (0.75, third in the BIG EAST) and surrendered a goal for the first time since Aug. 31.
Two more St. John's freshmen made their collegiate debuts against Xavier, as Matt Chandler and Cole Reardon stepped onto the pitch for the first time in red and white. Overall, 11 different freshmen have played so far this season for the Johnnies.
Mount St. Mary's, which reinstated its men's soccer program this season after a five-year hiatus, comes to Queens following its first win on Saturday night, 1-0, against VMI. The Mountaineers are 1-4-2 on the campaign.
Mount St. Mary's has struggled to get on the board so far in 2018, finding the back of the net just four times in seven games. The Mountaineers have yet to score more than one goal in a single contest and have no players with multiple goals on the season.
Tuesday will mark the first-ever meeting between St. John's and Mount St. Mary's.
