Red Storm Downs Stony Brook in Four Sets

Five Johnnies hit a clip of over .400 in victory
The St. John's volleyball team defeated Stony Brook on the road in four sets on Tuesday night.
The Red Storm (7-1) hit a clip of .330 as a team in the four sets and never had a set below .240. Five players hit above .400 in the contest.
The Johnnies took the first set 25-18 behind four kills from Kayley Wood. The sophomore led the team with 14 kills and five blocks with a hitting percentage of .400. This marks the fourth time this season Wood has reached double digits in kills this season. St. John's only committed two attack errors in the set compared to seven for the Seawolves (3-5).
The Red Storm dropped the second set 25-19 after Stony Brook hit .450 and committed only one error in the frame. Rachele Rastelli had five of her seven kills in set two as Stony Brook went on an 8-2 run midway through the frame to put them up 20-14 before evening the match.
St. John's fell behind early in set three before mounting a comeback to win 25-22. The Red Storm finished the third frame on a 13-3 run after falling behind 19-12. Erica Di Maulo delivered 15 of her 45 assists in set three and also recorded assist number 2,700 in her career in the match. The junior currently ranks fifth in program history in assists.
Efrosini Alexakou also played in her first career match against Stony Brook, recording two of her three kills and her first career service ace in the third set.
The Johnnies finished the Seawolves in the fourth set 25-19 behind four kills from Nia Diaz. The redshirt junior had 12 in the match and posted a hitting percentage of .588 to lead the team. The middle hitter has posted 58 kills in eight matches in 2018 after recording eight her first two seasons in Queens.
The Red Storm travels to Texas this weekend to participate in the Fredonia Hotel/Holiday Inn Express SFA Invitational in Nacogdoches. They will play Stetson at noon and host-school Stephen F. Austin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday before finishing the event against Tennessee State at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
