Red Storm will look to top the Owls for the second-straight season
The St. John's men's soccer team will look to climb back above the .500 mark in Philadelphia this weekend, traveling to The City of Brotherly Love for a Saturday night match against the Temple Owls. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Temple Sports Complex and will be streamed live on OwlSports.com.
The Red Storm (2-2-0) enters its match with the Owls after splitting its first home matches of the year. Last Friday, the Johnnies used a 92nd minute golden goal from Tani Oluwaseyi to down reigning MAAC Champion Fairfield, 2-1, before falling to Lehigh on Tuesday by a score of 1-0. Despite coming out on the losing end of the result, the Red Storm outplayed the Mountain Hawks for much of the evening. In the second half, Lehigh held off a furious St. John's push, as the Red Storm recorded a 10-3 second-half shot advantage but proved unable to convert on its opportunities.
Lehigh's clean sheet of the Red Storm followed a two-game stretch in which the St. John's offense appeared to be unstoppable. After topping Loyola Marymount, 4-1, on Aug. 26, the Red Storm hung up two more goals on Fairfield the following Friday. Six goals marked the team's best offensive output through three games since 2012, while four goals signaled the team's highest single-game total since the final match of the 2013 regular season, a 5-0 win over Seton Hall in South Orange.
Leading the way offensively for the Red Storm is junior midfielder Matt Forster, who recorded three goals in the team's first three games. The Bedford, England, native has already matched his combined career total from his freshman and sophomore campaign compiled over 23 appearances. Forster and Oluwaseyi, who logged two goals and two assists in the team's 2-1 start, were the first Johnnies since 2010 to record as many points in as few opportunities to begin a season.
Freshman Skage Simonsen has also been vital to the Red Storm's offensive efforts in the early going this season, registering a goal and two assists. Simonsen is one of five first-year collegiate players to have started every game this season for the Johnnies, joining Brandon Knapp, Athit Berg, Tiago Teixeira and Johan Aquilon. Overall, 25 of the roster's 33 members are newcomers to the program while nine first-year Johnnies have started at least two matches.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Rowland, Temple enters Saturday's contest with a record of 2-2-0 on the season. After dropping 1-0 decisions at UMBC and VCU, the Owls responded with 1-0 victories at ODU and Rider, the latter of which came in overtime. Saturday will mark the Owls' 2018 home opener at Temple Sports Complex.
Junior Zach Brown and freshman Jalen Campbell have each scored a goal for Temple this season, while junior Simon Lefebvre has started three of the team's four games in net. The Ossun, France, native registered his first clean sheet of the year in Wednesday's win over Rider. Junior Michael Samnik started the squad's other contest in goal and picked up a four-save shutout in a 1-0 win over ODU on Sept. 2.
St. John's and Temple met for the first time last season, as Red Storm downed the Owls, 2-0, at Belson Stadium on Sept. 9. Forster scored one of his three goals on the season in the win over Temple, adding an insurance marker in the 74th minute.
