St. John's Competes in Annual Home Fencing Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. – Taking on five schools that all rank inside the top eight in this week's College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll, the Red Storm fencing team came away with two victories to finish 2-8 in all competitions.
Both the men's and the women's team finished with one victory apiece, while the Columbia men's fencing team won the title with a perfect 5-0 record and the Notre Dame women's squad was 4-1 to win the invitational.
The women's epee team topped the Johnnies with the most victories as the squad tallied 20 on the day behind nine from Andrea Rizzi. Also competing in epee, Dominique Tannous and Anastasia Vlassova combined for 11 wins. Karolina Kaleta and Kasia Lachman each had 11 victories for the Johnnies in sabre and foil, respectively.
On the men's side, Nathan Vaysberg, Ivan Zagoruiko, and Shomari Moore combined for 21 of the 25 triumphs in men's epee. Omari Smoak also added four wins in the epee competition for the Red Storm.
The men's sabre squad tacked on 18 victories using an assortment of five different fencers. Nathan Vaysberg finished with six victories and Fares Ferjani, Dalton Walker, and Sal Centanni each added four wins.

Coach Gelman's squad will return to the piste tomorrow for the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
