Kajan and Madden find the back of the net in St. John’s setback
After a hard-fought 93 minutes, the St. John's women's soccer team fell to No. 19 Georgetown in a 3-2 overtime game to close out the regular season in Washington, D.C.
Paula Germino-Watnick scored the game winner on a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to lift the nationally ranked Hoyas (12-3-3, 6-1-2 BIG EAST) to victory.
Despite Georgetown outshooting the Johnnies by 16-2 margin, the Red Storm (5-12-1, 2-6-1 BIG EAST) needed just two shots to score a pair of goals. The duo of Zsani Kajan and Alex Madden both recorded tallies on the afternoon to take the nationally ranked Hoyas to extra time.
Kajan also picked up an assist for the Red Storm, her first of the season, on Madden's goal. With her fifth goal in three games, Kajan tied her season-high total of 11. The Budapest, Hungary, native joins St. John's greats Adriana Viola and Rachel Daly as the only three Johnnies in program history to record over 22 goals in back-to-back seasons.
Madden's score marked her second of the year to tie redshirt senior Samantha Masur for the second-highest goal total on the team.
Jessica Garziano notched her fifth assist of the campaign on Kajan's tally to close out her rookie season with a combined five points.
St. John's wasted no time jumping out on top, as Kajan netted her 11th goal of the season just three minutes into action. Garziano played a magnificent through ball into the box for Kajan, who finished in the left corner of the cage, giving the Johnnies an early 1-0 advantage.
Georgetown responded in the 17th minute, as Germino-Watnick found the back of the net for her first of three goals on the afternoon to knot the score at one. Just over 10 minutes later, Germino-Watnick struck again to give the Hoyas a 2-1 lead entering the intermission.
Coming out of the half, the Johnnies broke through on their second shot of the match in the 62nd minute. The sequence began with Kajan winning a loose ball in the offensive end and quickly drawing the attention of three Georgetown defenders. The Budapest, Hungary, native then played the ball up to Madden, who punched home the equalizer, sending the contest into overtime.
Just three minutes into extra time, Germino-Watnick notched a hat trick, converting on a penalty kick to secure the win for the Hoyas.
