Correa will be immediately eligible to play in 2019-20
On Friday, the NCAA approved the waiver of St. John's freshman guard Leilani Correa, granting her eligibility as she will join the Red Storm women's basketball program for the 2019-20 season. Â
Â
Correa transferred to St. John's from West Virginia in September, after committing to the Mountaineers during the November signing period.
Â
A four-star recruit coming out of Manchester Township, Correa checked in at no. 21 amongst guards by ESPN Hoop Gurlz following her senior year. In addition, Correa was ranked as high as no. 8 at her position by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
Â
The Manchester, N.J., native is the latest in a long line of highly touted Tri-State recruits to commit to St. John's during the Head Coach Joe Tartamella era.
Â
During her high school career, Correa led Rutgers Prep to three-straight South Jersey, Non-Public B titles before transferring to Manchester Township to finish out her career. Correa was a 2017-18 All-USA New Jersey First Team honoree and a member of the U.S.A. Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship team.
Â
As a senior, Correa averaged 16.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. The Manchester, N.J., native recorded 13 double-doubles in her final year with the Hawks. That same season, Correa notched a pair of 30-point performances.
Â
On the travel circuit, the 6-foot guard also played for the Philly Belles Burbridge, the nation's first girls travel team program.
Â
Correa and the St. John's women's basketball team will open the season on Nov. 5, with a trip to St. Bonaventure where the Johnnies will take on the Bonnies in a 5 p.m. contest on ESPN+.
