Leilani Correa Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

The rookie guard recorded a team-high 18 points in her collegiate debut
Following an impressive rookie debut last Tuesday at St. Bonaventure, Leilani Correa has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Correa burst onto the scene for the Red Storm, draining a team-high 18 points to lead the Johnnies to a 68-56 victory over the Bonnies in her collegiate debut. The last St. John's rookie to score 18 or more points in their first taste of college action was Kia Wright, who scored 33 in 2004.
With double-digit scoring against St. Bonaventure, Correa became the third St. John's rookie in as many seasons to record double figures in a freshman debut. The 6-foot guard joined Kadaja Bailey and 2018 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Qadashah Hoppie who scored 14 and 16 points in their first rookie appearances.
Correa, a product of Manchester Township High School in New Jersey, hit seven of her 10 tries from the floor including one from long distance. In addition to her scoring ability, Correa brought down six rebounds while also registering an assist, a steal and a block in 25 minutes of turnover free action.
Correa and the Red Storm will return to action on Wednesday, as St. John's welcomes Lafayette to Carnesecca Arena for the team's home opener at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
