PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 6, 2019) – Wrapping up the 2019 regular season on Wednesday night in Providence, the No. 8 St. John's men's soccer team fell to the Friars at Anderson Stadium by a score of 2-0.
The loss marked the first of the season for St. John's (13-3-1, 6-2-1 BIG EAST) against an unranked opponent. The Friars (12-5, 5-3 BIG EAST) entered the game with an RPI of 30 and had won five of their last six matches. St. John's checked in at no. 4 in Monday's latest release of the RPI.
Regardless of Wednesday night's result, St. John's had already secured the no. 2 seed in next week's BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship. The Red Storm will host the winner of Saturday's quarterfinal matchup between third-seeded Providence and sixth-seeded Marquette on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Belson Stadium. Kick-off for that semifinal matchup is set for 6 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
The Red Storm and the Friars played a scoreless first half with the Johnnies carrying a slight 3-2 edge in shots into the intermission. Josiah Crawford nearly put St. John's on the board in the closing minute of action, but Providence keeper Austin Aviza punched the sophomore's long try over the bar to preserve the scoreless tie after 45 minutes.
Paulo Lima scored the game's first goal in the 50th minute off assists from Joao Serrano and Trevor Davock.
The Red Storm responded with four shots over the next 25 minutes of action, but Providence extended its lead to a pair in the 78th minute thanks to a goal from Wolf Pro on assists by Tiago Mendonca and Kevin Vang.
Tani Oluwaseyi led St. John's with three shots on the evening while Crawford and Skage Simonsen tallied two apiece.
Jan Hoffelner turned aside seven of the Friars' nine shots on goal, a season high for the junior keeper. Hoffelner, who entered the contest with the nation's fourth best goals against average, played the full 90 minutes for just the second time this year.
St. John's six wins during BIG EAST regular season play were the most for the program since the conference title campaign of 2009, when the Johnnies went 6-1-4 against league foes.
The winner of next Wednesday's semifinal will earn a spot in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship Final, which will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 12 p.m. on FS2. The higher seed hosts all games in the conference tournament.
