St. John's Falls to No. 17/17 Marquette, 88-57, in BIG EAST Quarterfinals

Brelove, Kebbe and Wellere finished with a team-high 13 points each
The St. John's women's basketball team saw its BIG EAST Tournament come to an end on Sunday, falling to top-seeded Marquette, 88-57, in the quarterfinal round at Wintrust Arena.
A trio of Johnnies paced the offensive attack for St. John's, as Curteeona Brelove, Alisha Kebbe and Akina Wellere all recorded 13 points for the Red Storm. Brelove also brought down a team-most seven rebounds against the Golden Eagles.
Kadaja Bailey closed out her first BIG EAST Tournament with a strong effort, finishing just shy of double figures with nine points for the Johnnies to go along with four rebounds.
The Golden Eagles controlled the momentum early in the contest, rattling off an 8-3 run to lead in the opening minutes. St. John's responded, converting on back-to-back buckets to knot the game at eight before Marquette unleashed an 11-2 run down the stretch to take a 19-10 advantage after the first 10 minutes of action.
Marquette's offensive surge carried over into the second quarter, as the Golden Eagles fired off a 13-2 run to lead by 20 points, 32-12, with under four minutes to play in the second stanza.
The Red Storm would get as close as 18 over the remainder of the half, with Marquette leading, 40-19, entering the intermission.
Kebbe paced the way for the Johnnies after 20 minutes, registering eight points on a 3-of-7 shooting effort from the floor.
Coming out of the locker room, the Golden Eagles managed to hold the Johnnies to just one bucket in the early minutes of the third quarter.
With Marquette leading 51-21 and 7:12 left on the clock, St. John's netted seven unanswered points to chip away at the Golden Eagles' lead. Marquette responded with an 11-2 run down the stretch, bumping their advantage to 62-30 after 30 minutes of play.
Despite a 27-point performance for the Red Storm over the final 10 minutes, there was not enough time for the Johnnies to create a comeback, as the Golden Eagles cemented the victory.
