QUEENS, N.Y. – After knocking off DePaul on opening night of the BIG EAST Tournament, the St. John's men's basketball team will return to Madison Square Garden for a quarterfinal showdown with second-seeded Marquette (23-8) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Johnnies aim for their third-straight victory over the Golden Eagles this season, which would catapult the team into the semifinals for the first time since 2000.
FS1 will carry the national telecast with Gus Johnson, Bill Raftery and Lisa Byington calling the action from Midtown. St. John's Radio broadcast featuring John Minko and Brandon Tierney can be heard on 970 AM WNYM. The audio broadcast is also available on TuneIn Radio and RedStormSports.com.
For the third-straight year, the Johnnies rallied for a first round victory under Head Coach Chris Mullin, downing the Blue Demons, 82-74, thanks to team-high 18-point performances from Shamorie Ponds, Justin Simon and Mustapha Heron. The Johnnies never trailed in a contest that featured all five Red Storm starters tallying double-figures, as LJ Figueroa added 14 points and Marvin Clark II chipped in 10 points. It marked the first time since an overtime victory at Georgetown on Jan. 5 that five St. John's players finished with double digits in the scoring column.
On Thursday, St. John's goes for its third-straight win over the Golden Eagles and fourth victory in the last five meetings. In their last contest on Feb. 5, Ponds sank the game winning bucket with 16 seconds on the clock to secure a 70-69 triumph at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The Red Storm, however, is still in search for its first BIG EAST Tournament victory over Marquette after coming up short in its previous four attempts.
Marquette is led by BIG EAST Player of the Year Markus Howard, who led the conference averaging 25.0 points per game, scored 25 total points in two regular season meetings with the Johnnies. The Golden Eagles enter the BIG EAST Tournament on a four-game slide after falling at home in their regular season finale against Georgetown, 86-84.
The winner of St. John's – Marquette will advance to Friday's semifinal contest taking on the winner of the Georgetown – Seton Hall.
