Becomes the first St. John’s rookie since Krystal Puga in 2015 to be selected
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 18, 2019) – Freshman Peyton Cody has been announced as a Top 25 candidate for the 2019 Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I Freshman of the Year Award on Thursday afternoon, ranking her among the best rookies in the NCAA.
"Peyton has performed in clutch situations all season, whether with a home run, single, double, or throwing out several attempted base stealers," Head Coach Bob Guerriero said. "Her RBIs speak volumes as to importance of having her in the lineup."
Cody has become the second Johnnie in program history to be named to the NFCA top 25 list, joining Krystal Puga (2015).
After vying for a spot in the Red Storm lineup early in the season, Cody has been a mainstay for the Johnnies as she is currently riding an 18-game hitting streak. Through 36 appearances in her rookie campaign, the Mission Viejo, Calif., native is batting .404 with 45 hits, 38 RBIs, 28 runs scored, nine doubles and six home runs. Of her 38 RBIs, 18 have come with the bases loaded.
In 11 BIG EAST contests, Cody boasts a .432 average with 10 of her 16 hits going for extra bases. Along with her seven doubles and three homers, the three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection has produced 17 RBIs and 13 runs scored.
On Thursday, May 9, the list will be trimmed down to the top 10 finalists before the top three will be selected and released on May 21. In its fifth year, the NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year selection will be made on May 28.
