Bellero signs with Femminile Lugano 1976 of Lega Nazionale A
Recent St. John's women's soccer graduate Christina Bellero will join former teammates Samie Scaffidi and Claudia Cagnina, as she continues her soccer career with Football Femminile Lugano 1976 of Lega Nazionale A, the top level of soccer in Switzerland.
"I am so excited to get the chance to travel and play professionally in Switzerland," said Bellero. "To play with FF Lugano and in the Champions League is a great opportunity and I am really looking forward to experiencing it. Also, getting to play with two former teammates only makes it better."
Over her four years with the Johnnies, the lethal scorer netted a combined 20 goals to finish her career eighth on the all-time list. Bellero also dished out 11 assists for a total 51 points in 74 games.
"My time at St. John's under Coach Ian Stone and his staff has helped prepare me for this opportunity," said Bellero. "I am so grateful to have received the chance to play with such amazing teammates over the past four years."
As a senior, Bellero helped St. John's to the BIG EAST Tournament for the 15th time in program history. The Mellville, N.Y., native played an integral part in the Johnnies' attack this past year to land herself a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team for the second-straight season. Bellero also received a nod to the United Soccer Coaches Division I Women's Scholar All-East Region Second Team.
"Christina has made huge contributions to the St. John's women's soccer program from her freshman year and throughout her career," said Coach Stone. "Her game is now completely ready for the Professional UEFA Champions League level. We all wish her luck and are very appreciative of everything that she has invested into our team."
This past season, the local product registered a total of six goals, good enough for the second best on the squad. In addition, Bellero dished out four assists for a combined 16 points, just one shy of her career-high 17.
"We are pleased to have signed Christina to our program," said Emanuele Gaiarin, the president of FF Lugano. "It is because of the PASS Program (www.passacademy.org) that we are able to bring talented student athletes to our club system."
Bellero joins a highly touted team in Football Femminile Lugano. The squad is coming off a stellar season, finishing second overall in the Swiss League to qualify for the UEFA round of 32.
