Alex Madden scored the Red Storm’s lone goal in the 16th minute
Facing off against Drexel on Sunday afternoon, the St. John's women's soccer team saw the Dragons score two late goals to come away with a 2-1 double overtime victory at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm has now played more than 90 minutes in four matches this season, reaching double overtime on two different occasions.
Alex Madden registered St. John's lone goal of the match, marking the first of her Red Storm career. Maia Cabrera and Addison Hornsey both picked up an assist on Madden's goal.
Trailing 1-0 with 13 seconds left to play in regulation, Drexel tied the game at one apiece, as Lily Dunbar netted the late goal. After neutralizing the Dragons' attack through the first 16 minutes of extra time, St. John's surrendered the game winner in the 107th minute.
The Johnnies broke through first in the 16th minute, as Madden found the back of the net to put the Johnnies up, 1-0. The play began as Cabrera sent the ball up to Hornsey, who sailed her pass across the box towards the far post. Madden collected the pass and ripped a shot past Drexel's keeper, giving the Red Storm an early advantage.
Over the final minutes of the opening stanza, St. John's backline withstood a flurry of late Drexel chances to hold off the Dragons and enter the break with a 1-0 edge.
In the first six minutes of the second half, Naya Lipkens came up big for the Red Storm, grabbing three saves to preserve the Johnnies' lead.
With 13 seconds left on the clock, freshman defender Dunbar scored for the Dragons to knot the match at one and send both programs into overtime.
With the score deadlocked at one, the Dragons continued to push the pace before eventually, Lauren Currey recorded the game-winning goal off an assist from Isabel Kuzy in the 107th minute to seal the victory.
St. John's will wrap up non-conference play on Saturday, welcoming Cornell to Belson Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m., and will be available to watch on ESPN3.
