The Red Storm will take on the Blue Demons on Friday before facing No. 10 Marquette on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2019) – Riding high off wins over then-No. 14 Oregon and Duke to win the 2019 Hofstra Invitational, the St. John's volleyball team will open conference play with pair of Midwest showdowns this coming weekend.
The Red Storm (8-5) will first travel to Chicago to take on DePaul inside the McGrath-Phillips Arena at 8 p.m. ET. St. John's will then head to Milwaukee the following day to wrap up its road trip against No. 10 Marquette in the Al McGuire Center at 6 p.m.
The Johnnies started off 2019 facing a loaded non-conference schedule. Three of the Red Storm's five losses have come against top 25 teams this season. St. John's also fell in five sets in its second match this year to Hawaii, who currently ranks no. 11 in the AVCA Coaches Poll. Nine of the squad's 13 opponents this season appeared in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Against the Ducks last Thursday night, sophomore outside hitter Efrosini Alexakou registered a game-high 28 kills while hitting a .460 clip in the Red Storm's four-set win. Alexakou, whose 28 kills are the most by a BIG EAST player this season, capped off the tournament by posting a double-double of 13 kills and a team-high 11 digs in St. John's win over Duke. For her efforts, the Thessaloniki, Greece, native was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after collecting a total of 41 kills and 18 digs across the two matches.
Reigning BIG EAST Libero of the Year Amanda Sanabia moved up to no. 4 on the all-time digs list with 1,566 career digs after collecting 18 in the tournament. Sanabia passed Connie Chae (1995-98) on the leaderboard (1,563 digs).
Erica Di Maulo recorded 48 assists against Oregon before dishing out 44 helpers in St. John's matchup with Duke. The senior setter ranks fourth all-time with 4,249 assists and is just 126 away from passing St. John's great Wioleta Leszczynska.
Di Maulo also ranks second in the BIG EAST with 22 service aces this season. Her 125 career service aces put her just 10 away from notching the most service aces in program history.
DePaul (8-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) faces St. John's after opening conference play with a five-set loss to Xavier.
Senior right side hitter Brittany Maxwell currently leads the team with 200 kills this season and was the lone Blue Demon to earn a spot on the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. Maxwell's 3.85 kills per set rank third in the conference.
Junior libero Isabelle Banez was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on September 17 after leading the Blue Demons to three-straight wins while posting 5.91 digs per set in the DePaul Invitational. Banez also leads the league with 275 digs (5.39 per set) this season.
This will be the first meeting between St. John's and DePaul in 2019, with the Red Storm holding a 16-6 all-time record against the Blue Demons.
No. 10 Marquette (11-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) enters Saturday's matchup on a five-game win streak after defeating Butler in straight sets during its first conference match on Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles' two losses this season came against then-No.17 Baylor and then-No.19 Illinois. Baylor has since climbed to the no. 2 spot in the AVCA Coaches Poll, while Illinois is currently ranked no. 20. The team also faced Illinois in the round of 16 of last year's NCAA Tournament before falling to the Fighting Illini in four sets.

Saturday's matchup will be the 22nd all-time meeting between the two programs. Marquette has won its last five matches against St. John's, as the Red Storm last topped the Golden Eagles on Nov. 13, 2016, in Milwaukee.
