QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2020) – The St. John's dance team captured its second National Championship in three years after its hip hop routine took home the top honor at the 2020 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championship on Sunday.
"I can't say enough good things about this team's resilience and hard work the past few months," Head Coach Christine McCarton said. "It is an amazing honor to bring our third national championship to St. John's with this being our second in Hip Hop."
McCarton's squad has earned both of their hip hop titles within the last five seasons, earning its first in 2016. In the same time frame, the dance team has finished third or better in the discipline. The Red Storm has now placed inside the top-ten for its hip hop routine in 10 consecutive competitions.
The Red Storm's most recent National Championship came in 2018 when the group earned the first ever game-day title in the UDA's inaugural section.
"We are so incredibly proud of their performance in the finals today which moved them up from fifth in semis to a national championship," Coach McCarton said. "Thank you to all the family members and friends who joined us on this trip as their cheering helped us do this both here in Florida and at home at St. John's."
In the organization's third ever game-day competition, the Red Storm picked up its third-straight top-five finish. Grand Canyon University earned the nation's top prize, followed by local competitor Hofstra in second.
In jazz, St. John's placed seventh out of 12 team with Utah Valley University taking home the country's top spot on Sunday.
The St. John's dance team's next performance will be on Jan. 28, when the men's basketball team takes on Villanova at Madison Square Garden.
