Ed Kull Named to Silver Waves Media Top Athletic Directors in America List

Kull recognized as one of the top leaders in intercollegiate athletics
QUEENS, N.Y.– St. John's Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed Kull was named to Silver Waves Media Top Athletic Directors in America list, the organization announced on Monday afternoon.
Kull, in only his second year at the helm leading the Red Storm Athletic Department was tabbed one of the top leaders The list was curated by athletic directors, search firms, agencies and industry leaders.
Kull returned to St. John's in October 2024, marking his third stint working at University. In under two years at the helm, the Long Island native has navigated the athletic department during an ever-changing time in the landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
In the last two years, the men's basketball has engineered its most impressive two-year stretch in four decades. The Red Storm put together back-to-back 30-win seasons and became the first team in BIG EAST history to win consecutive outright regular season and tournament championships. This past year, Head Coach Rick Pitino guided the Johnnies to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1999.
Under Kull's leadership, St. John's has expanded its long-standing partnership with Madison Square Garden. During the 2025-26 season, the Red Storm men's basketball team played 12 regular season games at The World's Most Famous Arena and averaged an attendance 16,386. Additionally, the women's basketball program hosted its first-ever standalone game at the Mecca welcoming top-ranked UConn. Since 2022-23, St. John's ticket revenue has seen over a 300 percent increase and the department continues to align itself with the Madison Square Garden Companies on marketing and ticketing to elevated brand awareness.
In total, the Red Storm's 17 varsity programs have won five BIG EAST Regular Season Championships, five conference tournament titles and made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances during Kull's tenure. The men's fencing team placed third in the NCAA Championships this past March, the men's tennis squad has captured back-to-back BIG EAST titles and the baseball program is competing in its first NCAA Regional Final since 2015 today against Florida State.
As college athletics entered the revenue sharing era, Kull kept St. John's ahead of the curve by launching the Red Storm Legacy Investment Fund. The fund allows for donations to be used directly by the institution for Name, Image and Likeness. Additionally, he orchestrated a new apparel deal with adidas to outfit all 17 of the Red Storm's varsity athletic programs. A proven fundraiser, Kull orchestrated a reseat of Carnesecca Arena and Madison Square Garden creating a priority points system that resulted in the highest athletics fundraising totals in University history.
Kull garnered a partnership to return Red Storm men's basketball to ESPN Radio for the first time in over two decades as all 37 games were aired by ESPN New York this past season. Additionally, the women's basketball program made its terrestrial radio debut on March 1 when it hosted UConn.
In the classroom, our student-athletes continue to outperform the general student population. For the 2024-25 academic year, St. John's student-athletes compiled a 3.58 GPA with 12 of the 17 teams recording a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Over the last two years, St. John's has had four College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans, including the 2025 CSC Academic Team Member of the Year.
Prior to arriving at St. John's, Kull spent four years as the athletic director at Fordham. During his time in the Bronx, he was instrumental in reaching new fundraising heights for the Rams. Coming from an extensive external relations background, Kull worked in entertainment marketing for the Glaceau and Coca-Cola companies and the NFL.
Kull, 44, and his wife Sarah reside on Long Island with their two sons, Ben and Lukas.
