Red Storm Council on Community, Culture and Social Justice to Launch Accept No Hate Campaign Nov. 2-6
QUEENS, N.Y. – From Nov. 2-6, St. John's Athletics will host its first ever Solidarity Week, a department-wide initiative developed by the Red Storm's Council on Community, Culture and Social Justice (CCCSJ). During the week, St. John's student-athletes, coaches, administrators and members of the University community will help officially activate the Accept No Hate movement through social media campaigns, virtual activities and by hosting an Athletics Town Hall for discussion on a variety of related topics.
"Now more than ever we need to keep our conversations moving forward," said Associate Athletics Director for Student Services Eric Rienecker. "Our goal is to empower student-athletes to find their voice and to be leaders regarding social justice issues."
Accept No Hate is a concept developed by St. John's Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to help advance the University's commitment to anti-racism, social justice and equality. Branded t-shirts displaying the statement will be distributed to all student-athletes who will utilize their platforms as NCAA Division I sports figures to spread the message.
"To me, Accept No Hate means that all people are accepted, included, feel loved and appreciated in the St. John's community and outside it as well," said Elyse Morris, a redshirt junior on the St. John's softball team. "As a black student-athlete, it means a lot to see that people care about issues such as this. It is something we need to make sure people feel loved, accepted and are not afraid to be themselves, because they can't control the color of their skin."
St. John's Athletics Solidarity Week will also feature action-oriented displays of unity through social media pushes utilizing the hashtags #Johnnies4Justice and #AcceptNoHate, a call-to-action Accept No Hate video, as well as the virtual discussion with prominent members of the Athletic Department, including Director of Athletics Mike Cragg, Head Men's Basketball Coach Mike Anderson, and SAAC leaders who will challenge all participants to make a commitment to lead, educate and inspire. Additionally, all athletic activities will be paused on Tuesday, November 3 for Election Day.
"I think its awesome that St. John's Athletics is coming together as one to support everything going on in the world recently," said Brandon Knapp, a junior on the Red Storm men's soccer team. "It's pretty upsetting to see the inequality that still goes on in the world today, but I am glad we are all coming together to make a stand to Accept No Hate. If everyone can spread the word to about Accept No Hate and get on board I think we can make a change and push others throughout our communities to make a change."
In an effort to make a positive impact in the surrounding community, the official St. John's Athletics' Accept No Hate t-shirt will also be available for sale to Red Storm supporters in the University bookstore and online beginning Nov. 2. Proceeds will benefit the local chapter of the NAACP. For more information visit www.naacpjamaica.org.
