The rookie guard recorded a team-high 32 points against Seton Hall on Saturday
For the fourth time this season, Leilani Correa has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Correa reached the 30-point mark for the third time this season, scoring a game-high 32 points in Saturday's win over Seton Hall to clinch the season sweep of the Pirates. The rookie knocked down nearly 61 percent from the field, making 14-of-23 attempts. Correa saw 19 of her 32 points come in the third quarter alone.
The Manchester, N.J., native is one of just two BIG EAST players with three 30-point games this season, along with Creighton senior Jaylyn Agnew. Correa's 32 points were five off the BIG EAST single-game rookie record of 37, set by Providence's Kerri Chatten in 1995.
With a trio of 30-point performances this season, Correa became just the second player in program history to do so and the first since Tawana Jackson, who reached 30 points four times in 1995. Correa also became the first Johnnie to eclipse 30 points in a conference contest since Jade Walker fired off 32 against Marquette on Jan. 8, 2017.
In addition to her scoring ability, Correa was a force on defense grabbing six boards and three steals in the Johnnies' victory.
Correa and the St. John's women's basketball team will return to action this weekend when the team continues its three-game homestand with Butler on Friday at 7 p.m. The Johnnies will then wrap up the regular season against Xavier on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Queens.
