Jessie Kweon turns in a two-round 147 (+5)
For the second time in three seasons, the St. John's women's golf program claimed the team title at the Benbow Invitational on Tuesday to kick off the spring slate.
"I am really proud of the team this week and starting off the spring season with a title," Head Coach Ambry Bishop said. "It's great to see the success coming out of the off season, and it gets our spring started with great momentum."
Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Jessie Kweon led the way for the Red Storm, firing off a 75 followed by a final-round 72 to place second overall in the standings.
Linda Wang and Andrea Sanchez also closed out play inside the top-five for the Red Storm, carding a 149 each to finish in a three-way tie for third.
"I am really happy for Jessie and her strong play the last two days," Bishop said. "She was very close to the win and came out a strong contender for the individual title. Andrea also had a great round today and had a chance to go even lower down the stretch. Linda continued her steady play and was also a big contributor."
Jill Beglin, who was competing as an individual, and Kaitleen Shee both turned in two-round scores of 161 to place in a tie for 32nd.
Cloe Clocchiatti jumped one spot on the leaderboard after carding a 79 on the day to finish with a combined score of 162.
Laia Barro, who was also competing as an individual, finished one-stroke back of Clocchiatti with a score of 163.
"We have a lot of positives going into the spring season," Bishop said. "We look forward to our next event at Pinehurst."
The Johnnies will return to action on Monday, March 30, when the team travels to North Carolina for the Pinehurst Invitational.
