The Johnnies earned the honor for the 15th time in the program history
QUEENS, N.Y. (July 21, 2020) – For the seventh straight year, the St. John's volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, earning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 season.
The honor, which is awarded to programs that maintain at least a 3.30 team GPA or higher during the school year, is the 15th in Red Storm volleyball history.
As a group, the Johnnies turned in a 3.72 GPA for the spring semester and a 3.59 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year.
"The pride of our program is the ability to recruit and develop great student athletes," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "There is no better example than receiving the AVCA Academic Award and a BIG EAST Championship all in the same year. Our student-athletes put in a tremendous amount of work to achieve this spectacular honor. This year's squad was a special group of young ladies and they have cemented themselves into St. John's Athletics history. I would also like to thank our academic advisor Alexandra Parise who has helped our student athletes successfully navigate through this pandemic."
Erica Di Maulo, Amanda Sanabia, Hanna Wagner and Rachele Rastelli led the way for St. John's as each player posted in a 4.0 GPA for the spring semester. Di Maulo and Wagner also recorded 4.0 GPA for the entire academic year.
The 2019-20 Red Storm volleyball squad featured 15 players from six different countries including Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic.
Since the program was formed in 1994, St. John's has been awarded this accolade more than any other school in the BIG EAST. In addition, under the guidance of Persico, the Red Storm volleyball program has earned a 3.0 GPA or better in all 26 of its seasons.
St. John's was previously honored by the AVCA in 2018-19 (3.48) 2017-18 (3.37), 2016-17 (3.47 GPA), 2015-16 (3.51 GPA), 2014-15 (3.32 GPA), 2013-14 (3.40 GPA), 2010-11 (3.31 GPA), 2008-09 (3.30 GPA), 2006-07 (3.45 GPA), 2000-01 (3.30 GPA), 1999-00 (3.30 GPA), 1997-98 (3.44 GPA), 1996-97 (3.54 GPA) and 1995-96 (3.48 GPA).
