Three different Johnnies find the back of the net in setback to Marquette
St. John's is now 6-5-2 (2-3-1 BIG EAST) following the conference road loss, while Marquette improved to 8-6-0 (4-3-0 BIG EAST).
Isabelle Aviza picked up her third goal of the season and the fifth of her Red Storm career in the opening half. With her tally against Marquette, the Medway, Mass., native becomes one of four Red Storm players to find the back of the net at least three times this season, joining Zsani Kajan, Brooke Boyd and Ava Collins. Frederique St.-Jean and Athina Sofroniou added their first goals of the campaign.
Trailing 3-1 at the intermission, St. John's scored two second-half goals to tie the game at three apiece, forcing the overtime period before surrendering the game winner in the 98th minute.
On the match, St. John's outshot Marquette, 17-12, including a 9-8 edge in shots on goal.
Marquette struck early, finding the back of the net in the ninth minute, as Rachel Johnson converted off a Katrina Wetherell corner kick.
Less than five minutes later, the Golden Eagles struck again, as Madison Burrier corralled a pass from Kylie Sprecher before burying it home to give Marquette a two-goal advantage.
St. John's broke through in the 23rd minute, as Aviza found the back of the net to pull the Johnnies within one, 2-1. The sequence began as Jessica Garziano played a long pass up to Kajan inside the box. The Budapest, Hungary, native found Aviza who sent her strike to the left corner of the cage to put St. John's on the board.
The two teams continued battle over the half. Then, with seconds remaining in the opening stanza, the Golden Eagles added another tally off the foot of Alyssa Bombacino to take a 3-1 lead at the intermission.
With nearly 25 minutes gone in the second stanza, the Red Storm pulled the contest within one, 3-2. This time, St.-Jean rocketed a shot from outside the 18-yard box to the right corner of the cage, cutting into the Golden Eagles' lead.
Nineteen minutes later, with the Johnnies in search of the equalizer, Sofroniou converted on her first collegiate goal to knot the game at three. The rookie from Dix Hills, N.Y., send a towering shot over the head of Marquette's keeper Mikki Easter to force the extra period.
Katrina Wethere scored the game-winner for the Golden Eagles eight minutes into overtime. Johnson picked up her third point of the night with an assist on Wethere's goal.
