St. John’s to Welcome Providence on Senior Day
10/16/2021 12:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Johnnies and Friars will kick off at 1 p.m.
The St. John's women's soccer team will continue BIG EAST action on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium, playing host to the Providence Friars.
Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Pat O'Keefe on the call from Queens.
The Johnnies will recognize 15 players on Sunday afternoon as part of the program's annual Senior Day. The upperclassman will be honored during a pregame ceremony on the field.
Sunday's contest will mark the 38th all-time meeting between St. John's (6-5-2, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) and Providence (8-4-2, 3-2-1 BIG EAST). Last season, the Johnnies and the Friars played each other to a pair of 1-1 double overtime draws.
The Red Storm is looking to snap a three-game losing skid on Sunday against its longtime rival. Despite its recent setback at Marquette, St. John's saw three different players find the back of the net to force the overtime period. In Thursday's meeting, Isabelle Aviza picked up her third goal of the season and the fifth of her Red Storm career in the 23rd minute. With her tally against the Golden Eagles, the Medway, Mass., native became one of four Red Storm players to register a goal at least three times this season, joining Zsani Kajan, Brooke Boyd and Ava Collins. Frederique St.-Jean and Athina Sofroniou added their first goals of the campaign against Marquette.
Kajan, who leads the BIG EAST in scoring this season, was one of three Johnnies to record an assist in Thursday's match. With her point against the Golden Eagles, the Budapest, Hungary, native bumped her career total to 87 points, just five shy of moving into second on the program's all-time list.
Providence enters Thursday's contest with a record of 8-4-2, including a 3-2-1 mark during conference action. The Friars are coming off a 1-0 overtime setback to Butler on Thursday evening in Indianapolis.
Sophomore Meg Hughes, who was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, led Providence with a goal in each victory last week, including the game-winning tally in the 107th minute against Villanova on Oct. 7. Hughes has found the back of the net eight times this season to lead her team offensively.
Following Thursday's contest, St. John's will gear up for a two-game road swing as the Johnnies visit Seton Hall on Oct. 21 before making a trip to Creighton on Oct. 24.
