St. John’s Drops Five-Set Match Against DePaul

Rachele Rastelli posted 27 kills in the match
CHICAGO, Ill. (Oct. 16, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to DePaul in five sets on Saturday night.
DePaul (12-8, 5-3 BIG EAST) took the first set, 25-21, before St. John's captured the second set, 25-12. The Blue Demons won the third set, 25-19, while the Red Storm grabbed the fourth set, 25-18. The fifth set went to DePaul, 15-12.
Rachele Rastelli posted a match-high 27 kills on a .460 hitting percentage in the match. She was the lone Johnnie to record double-digit kills. The senior also contributed four service aces, four block assists and seven digs.
Ariadni Kathariou tallied eight kills on a .438 clip along with eight block assists while Eleonora Tosi notched six kills, three service aces, five block assists and the lone Red Storm solo block. Iliana Rodriguez recorded two service aces while Sheena Yoshioka and Bree Martin posted one each.
Tiziana Baumrukova collected 36 assists, five kills and three block assists.
St. John's (12-10, 3-5 BIG EAST) led the match in points, aces and blocks.
The Red Storm got off to an early 16-5 lead in the first set. Rodriguez notched two service aces in the run while Tosi recorded three kills. DePaul came back with a 19-5 spurt to take the set, 25-21.
Up 13-8 in the second set, the Johnnies grabbed nine straight points to advance their lead to 22-8. Rastelli tallied three consecutive kills in the run. The Red Storm grabbed three of the next five points to take the set, 25-12.
St. John's was up 2-0 in the third set when DePaul went off on a 12-1 run to take the lead, 12-3. The Johnnies battled back but could not close the deficit and dropped the set, 25-19.
In the fourth set, the Red Storm held a 12-10 lead when it went off on a 6-1 spurt to open the score to 18-11. The teams traded points until Rastelli closed the set with a service ace at 25-18.
With St. John's up 5-3 in the fifth set, DePaul took the lead, 9-6, on a 6-1 run. Two consecutive kills by the Blue Demons gave them the set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.
St. John's returns home next weekend starting with a match against Xavier on Saturday at 3 p.m.
