St. John’s Falls to Providence in Four Sets

The loss comes a day after the Red Storm upset No. 16 Creighton
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2021) – Just 21 hours after defeating No.16 Creighton in four sets, the St. John's volleyball team recorded a loss against Providence in four sets on Saturday.
The Red Storm (11-7, 2-2 BIG EAST) won the first set 25-18, before dropping the next three to the Friars, 25-23, 27-25, and 25-20, respectively.
Rachele Rastelli, the BIG EAST's leader in kills, recorded a team-high 17 kills on a .300 hitting percentage along with two service aces and three block assists.
Giorgia Walther notched 16 kills while Eleonora Tosi tallied a service ace along with three block assists. Tiziana Baumrukova, the BIG EAST's assists leader, added in 31 assists while Wiktoria Kowalczyk threw in 14 helpers and four kills.
Sheena Yoshioka captured a career-high 28 digs to go along with one service ace. Her previous career high was 21, set against Fordham on Feb. 3, 2021.
Defensively, Ariadni Kathariou recorded three block assists, while Jovana Askovic notched the lone Red Storm solo block as well as two block assists.
In the first set, Providence (13-4, 1-3 BIG EAST) was up 13-12, before the Red Storm flipped the switch and recorded a 13-5 spurt to take the set, 25-18. In the run, Walther recorded three consecutive kills.
St. John's had a two-point lead at 16-14 in the second set. The Friars responded with a 10-4 spurt to get to set point at 24-20. Rastelli's two kills and a Yoshioka ace would hold off Providence until a kill by Shaliyah Rhoden gave the Friars the set, 25-23.
The third set saw St. John's up 5-4 before Providence went off on a 9-3 spurt to get ahead 13-8. Down five at 19-14, St. John's recorded seven of the next nine points to tie the game at 21. It was a kill and an attack error that game the Friars the set, 27-25.
Down 12-9, Providence jumped out with a 13-3 run to take the lead 21-14 in the fourth set. St. John's recorded six of the next 10 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Friars' 25-20 victory.
The Red Storm returns to action next weekend on the road when it faces Butler on Friday at 6 p.m.
