St. John’s Falls to Butler in Three Sets

The Bulldogs posted 12 digs to Red Storm’s Three
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Butler in three sets on Friday evening.
Set scores were 25-15, 25-21, and 25-23, respectively.
The BIG EAST's reigning Player of the Week, Rachele Rastelli, posted a match-high 13 kills. The senior was the only player to record double digit kills.
Tiziana Baumrukova and Wiktoria Kowalcyzk both recorded 12 assists while Baumrukova also added 12 digs. Sheena Yoshioka captured a team-high 18 digs along with two service aces while Iliana Rodriguez notched one service ace.
Defensively, Maria Angelica Palacios, Eleonora Tosi, and Jovana Askovic each posted two block assists.
The Red Storm was without BIG EAST Player of the Year Efrosini Alexakou and team captain Klara Mikelova due to injury.
The biggest statistical deficit came from service aces as Butler posted 12 to St. John's three.
In the first set, the Bulldogs got off to an early 10-3 lead. The Red Storm was able to get within five at 15-10, before the Bulldogs posted a 5-0 spurt to get to 20-10. Of the next 10 points, St. John's recorded five of them but Butler took the set after kills from Melody Davidson and Mariah Grunze, 25-15.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the second set. Rastelli was responsible for three kills in the run. Down 13-9, the Bulldogs went off on a 11-1 spurt to open the score to 20-14. With Butler at set point, the Johnnies captured four points but could not close the deficit. A Melody Davidson kill closed the set 25-21.
In the third set, the two teams traded points up until the end. A Butler block would give them the set, 25-23, and the match 3-0.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Xavier at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.
