Red Storm falls in the 110th minute
WASHINGTON – A golden goal with just 38 seconds remaining on the clock in double overtime gave No. 2 Georgetown a 2-1 over St. John's on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field.
With the win, the league-leading Hoyas improved to 12-1 on the season with a 6-1 mark in BIG EAST play. St. John's fell to 8-4-2 with a 3-2-2 record against conference foes.
Brandon Knapp scored the St. John's goal, his fourth of the season, finding the back of the net in the 49th minute of an assist from Wesley Leggett. Knapp, who also has five assists on the campaign, bumped his team-leading point total to 13.
Shots were 20-9 in favor of the Hoyas, but Georgetown held a slim 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Wednesday marked the Red Storm's fifth consecutive game that went in overtime, a program record. Prior to its current streak, the Red Storm had gone more than 90 minutes in four straight games on three separate occasions in 2009, 2000 and 1996. That 2009 BIG EAST Championship squad matched an NCAA record with nine draws on the campaign.
After St. John's recorded a shot and a corner kick in the opening minute of play, Georgetown responded to the early threat by scoring the game's first goal just 98 seconds into the action, as Stefan Stojanovic redirected a cross from Kyle Linhares near the penalty spot.
St. John's continued to threaten over the remainder of the first half, as Adrian Roseth fired a pair of shots on net, while Jared Juleau and Filip Kangeman also produced chances at the equalizer.
The Red Storm finally broke through on the other side of the intermission, as Leggett beat his defender down the left side before sending a cross to the near post for Knapp. The senior from Abingdon, Md., slipped the ball through a gap between the bar and Georgetown keeper Ethan Koehler, knotting the contest at one.
Following a few stellar defensive efforts from Luka Gavran and the Red Storm backline, the Johnnies and the Hoyas appeared to be heading for a draw late in the second extra period.
The Hoyas made one final push in the 110th minute. Following a near-side throw-in and a series of bounces in the box, the Red Storm seemed to clear the zone with just about 40 seconds remaining. Junior Aidan Rocha gained possession well outside the box and sent a long try on net that deflected off a St. John's defender and got past Gavran.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday, playing host to Marquette at Belson Stadium. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Saturday's match will also feature a pregame men's soccer alumni reception as part of St. John's Athletics Homecoming Weekend.
