Three Johnnies recorded double-digit kills in the loss

QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team dropped its match against Butler in four sets on Sunday afternoon.

St. John's (13-11, 4-6 BIG EAST) won the first set, 26-24, before dropping the next three, 25-27, 14-25, and 17-25, respectively.

Rachele Rastelli led the Johnnies offensively with 18 kills and one service ace. She also recorded two block assists.

Eleonora Tosi contributed 14 kills on a .276 hitting percentage to go along with one block assist while Giorgia Walther notched 12 kills and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs. Ariadni Kathariou added in 4.5 points with one service ace and five block assists while Sheena Yoshioka tallied 20 digs. Maria Angelica Palacios recorded five kills and two block assists.

Tiziana Baumrukova achieved a double-double tallying 37 assists and 11 digs.

Led by Melody Davidson with 11 blocks, Butler notched 14 rejections to St. John's seven.

In the first set, Butler (12-11, 6-4 BIG EAST) led 20-14 before the Red Storm went off on a 9-1 run to take the lead, 23-21. Rastelli and Tosi tallied two kills apiece during the spurt. After a tie at 24, a Rastelli kill and Kathariou service ace gave the Johnnies the set, 26-24.

Led by Walther with three kills, St. John's grabbed an early 14-6 lead in the second set. Down 17-11, the Bulldogs retaliated with an 8-2 run to get within one, 19-18. With the Red Storm up 23-21, Butler recorded seven of the next nine points to take the set, 27-25.

After the Johnnies got within one in the third set at 4-3, the Bulldogs dominated the rest of the set. Butler recorded a .257 clip in comparison to the Red Storm's -.059.

In the fourth set, Butler was up 17-15 when it went off on an 8-2 spurt to close the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.

St. John's will travel to our nation's capital next weekend to face Georgetown on Friday at 5 p.m.
